TL;DR: Most podcasts fail before they ever find their audience, not because of bad audio, but because they launched without a foundation. This podcast launch checklist covers the 6 things you need in place before you record a single episode.

Everyone wants to talk about the microphone. The editing software. The logo. But here’s what I’ve learned coaching women through podcast launches: the gear is never the problem. The missing foundation is.

After helping dozens of podcasters go from idea to launched show,  and serving as a judge for the PodGround Creator Micro-Grant where I reviewed 5+ real shows,  I can tell you exactly where most podcasts fall apart. And it almost always traces back to something that should have been decided before Episode 1 ever got recorded.

This podcast launch checklist isn’t about gear. It’s about everything that needs to be in place before the gear even matters.

Why Most Podcasts Don’t Make It Past Episode 10

Over 90% of podcasts go silent after just a few episodes. Not because the host lost interest. Because they launched without a plan and ran out of direction fast.

A podcast launch checklist isn’t just a to-do list. It’s your insurance policy against that statistic. When you know your purpose, your listener, and your content plan before you hit record,  you have something to come back to every single week. That’s what keeps a show alive.

Let’s go through all 6.

The Podcast Launch Checklist: 6 Things to Have Before Episode 1

Infographic showing six things needed before recording a first podcast episode, including a podcast concept, target listener, episode plan, recording setup, hosting platform, and launch plan.

1. A One-Sentence Podcast Concept

Before anything else,  before your name, your logo, before you even think about a microphone,  you need to be able to explain your podcast in one sentence. Not a paragraph. One sentence.

That sentence needs to answer three things: what the show is about, who it’s for, and what the listener walks away with.

Example: “This podcast helps Latina entrepreneurs launch and grow their shows using SEO and strategy,  without the overwhelm.”

If you can’t write that sentence yet, that’s your first task. Everything else on this podcast launch checklist depends on it. I’ve seen beautiful, well-produced shows fail because the host couldn’t articulate what the show was about,  and neither could their listeners.

2. A Specific Target Listener

“Women” is not a target listener. “Entrepreneurs” is not a target listener. A target listener is a specific person with a specific problem who is specifically looking for what you offer.

The more clearly you can picture one person sitting in their car listening to your show,  who she is, what she’s struggling with, what she hopes to get from your episodes,  the better your podcast will perform. Not just with listeners. With the algorithm, too.

When your content speaks to one specific person, that person tells others. That’s how loyal audiences form. I’ve written more about building that kind of community in my post on how to build a supportive community around your podcast.

3. Your First 5 Episodes Planned

You don’t need them recorded. You don’t even need them fully outlined. But you do need to know what you’re talking about in your first five episodes before you hit record on Episode 1.

Why five? Because your first episode sets a promise. Episodes 2 through 5 prove you can keep it. If you launch without knowing what’s coming next, you’ll feel the pressure immediately,  and that’s when inconsistency starts.

Write down five episode titles. If you struggle to come up with five topics, that’s important information. It might mean you need to go back to step one and clarify your concept.

4. Your Recording Setup (It Doesn’t Have to Be Expensive)

Now we can talk about gear,  but only after the foundation is solid.

Your recording setup does not need to be expensive to sound professional. What it needs to be is consistent and quiet. A USB microphone, a soft-furnished room (a closet full of clothes works), and free recording software like Audacity or GarageBand is a completely legitimate starting point.

I’ve broken down the real cost of everything in detail,  including what you can do for free and where spending makes sense, in my post on the cost of podcasting. Read that before you buy anything.

The one thing I will say: invest in a decent dynamic microphone before anything else. Audio quality is the one thing listeners can’t get past. Everything else can be rough around the edges when you’re starting out.

5. A Podcast Hosting Platform

Your podcast needs a home before it can live on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or anywhere else. That home is your podcast hosting platform.

Your hosting platform stores your audio files and distributes them across podcast directories through your RSS feed. Without it, your episodes go nowhere.

There are free options (Buzzsprout, Anchor/Spotify for Creators) and paid options with better analytics and more control. My recommendation is to start with whatever gets you launched,  and upgrade as your show grows. Don’t let the perfect hosting platform be the reason you don’t launch.

What matters most at this stage is that you have one, and that you understand how your RSS feed works. If podcast SEO is part of your growth plan,  and it should be,  your hosting platform is where a lot of that optimization happens. Here’s my full breakdown of what podcast SEO is and where to apply it.

6. A Simple Launch Plan

This is the one most people skip,  and the one that makes the biggest difference.

A launch plan doesn’t need to be complicated. It needs to answer three questions: How will people find out the show exists? What do you want them to do when they find it? And how will you keep them coming back?

At a minimum, your podcast launch checklist should include:

Consistency is the most underrated part of a podcast launch. I cover how to set up evergreen systems that support your show long-term in my post on evergreen marketing strategies for podcasters.

What Happens When You Launch With This Checklist in Place

When these six things are solid before you record Episode 1, something shifts. You stop second-guessing every decision because the decisions are already made. You stop running out of content because you have a content plan. And you stop feeling like you’re building a plane while flying it.

That’s the difference between a podcast that makes it past Episode 10 and one that becomes a loyal listener’s favorite show.

FAQ’s About Podcast Launch Checklist

Do I need a website before I launch my podcast?

You don’t need one on day one, but it helps. A website gives you a place to post show notes, build SEO, collect emails, and send listeners who want to go deeper. I’d recommend getting a simple one up within the first month of launching. Read more about why show notes matter for your podcast; they’re your bridge between your audio and your website.

How many episodes should I have ready before I launch?

At least six. Launching with six episodes gives new listeners something to binge,  which tells the algorithm your show is worth recommending. One episode makes it feel like a test run. Six episodes say you’re here to stay.

Do I need to be on every podcast platform?

No. Start with Apple Podcasts and Spotify, which represent the largest share of listeners. Once your show is distributed through your hosting platform, most directories pick it up automatically anyway. Focus your energy on creating great content, not managing 15 platforms.
