TL;DR: Yes, and it’s one of the most underrated small business ideas for service providers. A podcast builds trust, attracts qualified leads through SEO, and keeps working for you long after you hit publish. You probably already have everything you need to start.

Thinking about starting a small business? Maybe you are thinking about opening an Etsy shop, or selling digital products on Stan Store or Gumroad. But one of the most overlooked business ideas isn’t about something you sell – it’s something you create.

Have you considered starting a podcast as a small-business idea? Hear me out.

A podcast is an asset that builds visibility, trust, and opportunities over time. (Ask me how I know.)

And if you’re already a coach, consultant, freelancer, or even a service provider, starting a podcast is one of the smartest investments you can make in your business.

Podcasting Has a Low Barrier to Entry

You probably already have the equipment needed to start a podcast. Answer these three questions:

  1. Do you have a smartphone?
  2. Do you have a laptop?
  3. Do you have a Canva account?

Then you already have what you need to get started. Contrary to what you may have heard, you don’t need fancy, expensive equipment to start.

Start recording on your phone. Upload the audio file to Auphonic for editing clean-up. Create your cover art on Canva. And upload your audio file to your podcast hosting site. Simple.

People overcomplicate things. Oh, and yes, you can have a successful podcast without video. But that’s a conversation for another day.

Everyone thinks podcasting requires a professional studio, but consistency matters more than perfection. Because less than 8% of podcasters make it to their 10th episode. As long as you keep going, you’ll be ahead of your competition.

A Podcast Builds Trust Before Someone Ever Hires You

When someone comes across your post on Instagram, they will only spend a few seconds on it. But when someone is listening to your podcast episode, they are listening to you for more! And if you publish a weekly episode, they spend more time listening to you than they do listening or reading your posts on Instagram.

Remember when your audience is listening to you, they:

When they are ready to book a call with you, they feel like they already know you because of the time they’ve spent listening to you.

Take it from a previous client. She mentioned that she listened to my podcast episode on optimizing for SEO and that someone randomly joined her coaching program. When she asked them how they found her, they mentioned they searched the keyword “food noise” – her podcast came up, they listened to a few episodes, and were sold on her coaching program.

The trust was built by every episode the person listened to, and they ended up joining the coaching program. If that happened to my client, why can’t it happen to you?

Podcasting Helps You Attract Qualified Leads

As mentioned above, when you optimize your show for SEO, you will include your target keywords, and when your audience searches for those keywords, your podcast will appear.

And yes, even with AI changing how people search on Google, SEO and keyword research are still relevant.

Your podcast episodes are evergreen content, so as long as people are searching for those keywords, the episodes will show in the search results. Unlike on social media, where posts have a lifespan of 24 to 48 hours. That means one podcast episode has the potential to bring you qualified leads for years.

People still listen to episodes on my podcast that I published years ago. Which is why I prioritize evergreen marketing strategies over social media.

Speaking of evergreen content, here are the key differences between podcast marketing and social media marketing.

Social Media Marketing:

Podcast Marketing:

Let me talk about that last one a little bit. When you look at social media strategies, they always say to post consistently with intention, and that usually means either multiple times per day or multiple times per week. I’ve heard of people posting like 3 times per day; I personally cannot do that because I am a wife, a mom of 2, have a corporate career, and run 2 podcasts.

Now, for podcasting, all you have to do is post 1 time per week. And that episode works for you forever! Again, I’ve had people discover my show in different episodes, and since they are evergreen and still relevant, the episodes still do their jobs. Whether it is to join my email list, buy a digital product, or sign up for my podcast coaching program, the episodes are working for me 24/7, and all I did was post them once.

Think of it this way: podcasting is like planting a fruit tree in your backyard instead of buying fruit every week.

7 Ways Your Podcast Can Make You Money

Of course, a business isn’t a business without making money! So, how does one make money with a podcast? Here’s a list:

As you know, I have two podcasts, and I’ve been able to monetize both. Here’s how.

For my interview-based immigration podcast, I’ve secured sponsorships and sold ad space. You can listen to an ad example in this episode. The podcast is also part of the podcast network, Geniua Media, where dynamic ads are placed within the podcast, and I get paid per download.

For my solo podcast about podcasting, I’ve monetized by selling my own services and digital products like:

And more.

For speaking opportunities, you can use your podcast as your portfolio. Often, when you pitch yourself to speak, they ask for examples of your experience, and podcast episodes are a good option to share.

Who Should Start a Podcast as a Small Business Idea?

I am a firm believer that entrepreneurs in any industry can benefit from having a podcast. For example, podcasting can be good for:

Just to name a few.

FAQ: Podcasting as a Small Business Idea

Is starting a podcast a good small business idea for beginners?

Yes,  especially because the barrier to entry is so low. Start a podcast for free using your smartphone, free editing tools, and a free Canva account. You don’t need a studio, expensive equipment, or a big audience to get started. You just need to start.

How long does it take for a podcast to make money?

It depends on your strategy. Some podcasters start monetizing within the first few months through services or digital products. Others build their audience first and add sponsorships later. The key is treating it like a business from day one — with a plan, consistent content, and an SEO strategy.

Can I repurpose my podcast content for social media?

Absolutely — and you should. One podcast episode can become social media clips, blog posts, email newsletters, and quote graphics. That’s the beauty of podcast content. You create it once and repurpose it everywhere. It’s one of the most efficient content strategies out there.
